Abu Dhabi, February 8, 2021: The Central Testing Laboratory of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC) has conducted a total of 18,889 tests on 2,233 fodder samples during 2o2o to check on their compliance with Abu Dhabi’s specifications, ensure the quality and safety of animal feeds and protect the livestock in the emirate. Speaking on the occasion Engineer Abdullah Hassan Al Maeeni, Executive Director of the Central Testing Laboratory Sector, stated that the central testing lab provides several chemical and biological testing services to ensure the safety and quality of fodders of all kinds whether herbal or concentrated.

“We are constantly working to develop our testing services in line with the QCC’s vision aiming to help the emirate's regulatory authorities implement their strategy and policies, enhance food and livestock safety and monitor pesticide residues in the commodities and products traded in the local markets.
To that end, we are making the most of the latest testing technologies and methods to detect chemical and biological contaminants such as pesticide residues, mycotoxins and heavy metals; and ensure they do not exceed the maximum levels stipulated in the legislation applicable in the UAE and Abu Dhabi,” Al Maeeni said.
He went on to say that the central lab also offers additional testing services to measure the rates of nutritional components in concentrated and herbal feeds, such as raw protein, raw fibers, neutral fibers and acid fibers, which are among the most important criteria for classifying the quality of the fodders, adding that the lab also renders microbiology testing services to detect molds and fungi that produce mycotoxins.
“Using the latest and most accurate testing devices, while depending on the expertise of its national cadres, the lab has recently expanded the scope of detection of pesticide residues in fodders, making it the UAE’s first lab to have the ability to detect (444) pesticides in fodders of all kinds.
The lab is also the only entity in the country to provide ergot alkaloids testing services, in yet another success added to its track record of achievements. With that in mind, we have been relentlessly striving to improve our services using the best technologies and latest devices,” Al Maeeni highlighted.
For his part, HE Rashid Al Rasas Al Mansouri, Executive Director of Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA)’s Animal Wealth Sector, stressed that the Abu Dhabi government has spared no effort to enhance the effectiveness of the biosecurity system in the emirate and ensure the safety and quality of animal feed traded in the emirate.
“The government’s strenuous efforts resulted in discarding some shipments after being found to be highly contaminated with chemical and biological pollutants that exceed the international and local standards, something which could have posed a real threat to livestock, and therefore to humans,”.
He added: "We in the ADAFSA are constantly coordinating with all government partners and stakeholders to ensure adherence to the strictest safety standards in this aspect."
Animal feed producers and distributors, farm owners and livestock breeders in Abu Dhabi can test their products by going directly to the lab’s service centres or submit a request for testing service through the council’s Jawdah portal.
The central lab emphasized that its quality testing services for animal fodders will ultimately help preserve the animal wealth in Abu Dhabi, and achieve biosecurity that guarantees animal health and the improvement of animal production.
The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council always seeks to improve the quality infrastructure in the emirate by providing different services that support regulatory authorities in the implementation of their integrated strategies.
Bodies concerned with the development of the livestock sector can benefit from the quality infrastructure services offered by the QCC, especially as the wise government pays utmost attention to this sector due to its close connection with the food and biological security rates in the emirate.
