Abu Dhabi, May 20, 2020: The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC) has lauded the role played by metrology in supporting and facilitating global trade as well as ensuring products’ compliance with international technical standards and specifications.

Celebrating the World Metrology Day, which falls on May 20 pf every year, the QCC affirmed that “metrology” helps achieve the quality that meets the aspirations and needs of consumers, individuals, institutions and countries. e
“We are keen to constantly support the efforts made by international metrology organizations and relevant governmental bodies to heighten awareness on the vital role of metrology in all walks of life,” the council said.

“The World Metrology Day, which is being celebrated this year under the theme of “Measurements for global trade”, represents an important occasion for metrology specialists to assess and highlight the role that international units of measurement can play in supporting the global economic system, improving the quality of life and protecting the global environment,” said HE Dr. Hilal Humaid Al Kaabi, Secretary-General of the council.
“We are celebrating this year’s occasion differently by launching our latest scientific publication, "The Unit of Measurement", which will serve as a key scientific reference for the council when implementing scientific tasks in the field of technical measurement”, Al-Kaabi added.
He stressed that the council has taken upon itself to enhance the role of metrology in backing various industrial and commercial sectors in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE, and realizes the importance of having an advanced metrological infrastructure that keeps pace with global developments, upgrades the national economy and boosts the competitiveness of national industries in the regional and global markets.
“Therefore, we have established the Emirates Metrology Institute (EMI) as one of the QCC’s main sectors to help achieve the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030, provide a sophisticated infrastructure for metrology and become the measurement reference for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE as a whole,” Al-Kaabi further said.
“The EMI has positively affected various economic sectors in the UAE, including the industrial one, by reducing costs and time, facilitating international acceptance of national industries, bolstering production capacity and improving safety,” he emphasized.
For his part, Saeed Mohammed Al Muhairi, Executive Director of the EMI, said that the World Metrology Day is a perfect occasion to highlight the vital role played by the Emirates Metrology Institute, which has become the national reference for measurement units in the country, undertaking the tasks of preserving and maintaining the national measurement standards in the UAE.
“The EMI represents the country in the mutual recognition agreement with the International Committee for Weights and Measures / CIPM / and also in many of the technical committees of metrological organizations and bodies at the regional and international levels”.
“After the being given the approval by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) to carry out its tasks, according to which the EMI measurement standards were recognized as national measurement standards, the institute has started providing a number of metrological services nationwide including calibration, technical advisory, technical training services as well as Intercomparisons, scientific research and development services,” Al Muhairi added.
“The institute operates 10 major metrology laboratories in different metrology fields such as Mass, Volume and Flow, Dimension and Angle, Temperature and Humidity, Electrical, Time and Frequency, Force, Torque and Pressure. It has also been accredited as a reference laboratory for the intercomparison programs for calibration laboratories in the country in coordination with the Emirates International Accreditation Center / EIAC /,” Al Muhairi highlighted.
Al Muhairi indicated that with its Emirati cadres and an Emiratisation rate of more than 85 per cent, the institute provides 112 metrological services to its customers and strategic partners in government and private sectors in the country and GCC countries.
He explained that the institute is accredited by the EIAC and that by the end of the last year 2019, the institute had completed issuing 3,173 calibration certificates, provided 91 technical advisory services and implemented 73 training programs, in addition to providing 249 intercomparisons.
