Abu Dhabi, November 16, 2024 — In a new achievement that further strengthens the United Arab Emirates' leadership role in quality infrastructure, the UAE has won the chairmanship of the Metrology Council of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) for the 2025-2027 term. This announcement came during meetings held in Istanbul, Turkey. Representing the UAE on the "Metrology Council" will be His Excellency Saeed Al Mheiri, Executive Director of the Emirates Metrology Institute (EMI), part of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council.
The UAE also secured seats on the SMIIC Board of Directors, Standardization Council, and Accreditation Council, during the 19th General Assembly of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries. This achievement marks the UAE's third consecutive advancement in global quality infrastructure, following its recent elections to the boards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in the past two months. These achievements support the UAE's strategic goals as a key driver of innovation in the region and its commitment to advancing collaboration in the fields of standards and quality to promote intra-regional trade and enhance global competitiveness.
The Emirates Metrology Institute took part in the 15th meeting of the SMIIC Metrology Council held in Istanbul on November 10, 2024. Led by His Excellency Omar Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, the UAE delegation also participated in the General Assembly on November 13. The discussions during these meetings focused on several key topics, including the progress of the Council's action plans, developments in metrology activities across member countries, joint research and development projects, halal standards, medical measurements, calibration programs, and updates on activities of the "GSO/GULFMET" group, with a strong emphasis on the Islamic countries’ commitment to strengthening cooperation in this vital sector.
Global Trust
His Excellency Omar Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, emphasized that the UAE’s election to three board positions in international standardization organizations is a testament to the global trust in the UAE’s capabilities. This recognition reflects the impact of the UAE’s quality infrastructure in enhancing efficiency, sustainability, market access, competitiveness, and innovation. “We also take this opportunity to congratulate the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC) for this well-deserved success in securing the chairmanship of the Metrology Council at SMIIC,” H.E. added.
His Excellency continued, “The UAE currently implements over 27,000 standards and technical regulations that support industrial sectors, innovation, sustainable manufacturing, energy efficiency, and more. These efforts enhance the country’s attractiveness to industrial investments and the competitiveness of our products in both local and global markets, in line with our national sustainable development goals.”
His Excellency Engineer Abdulla Al Yazeedi, Acting Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC), expressed his pride and honor on behalf of the Council, noting that this achievement reinforces the UAE’s continuous and integrated efforts to enhance its standing on the global stage. "Chairing the Institute will serve as an important platform for knowledge exchange and fostering innovation in measurement, calibration, and standardization," H.E. said. "This is also a significant step toward boosting international collaboration in the field of metrology among Islamic countries."
His Excellency Saeed Al Mheiri, Executive Director of the Emirates Metrology Institute (EMI), expressed his pride in the appointment, emphasizing the Institute's commitment to enhancing cooperation among member countries and supporting initiatives aimed at advancing measurement infrastructure and exchanging expertise. As the new Chairman of the Metrology Council, Al Mheiri is committed to leading new initiatives to develop metrology across Islamic countries, with a focus on supporting innovation and scientific research to improve the quality and accuracy of measurements according to the highest global standards.
