The Market & Consumer Services Sector of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council conducted an inspection campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology from March 4 to 14, 2024. The campaign aimed to verify the accuracy of weights, sizes, and quantities of pre-packaged products (Ramadan Mir) sold in major shops, retail stores, and factories across Abu Dhabi's markets. This initiative seeks to safeguard the rights of consumers, as well as those of manufacturers, distributors, and importers, thereby contributing to the economy and benefiting society as a whole.
The campaign is conducted annually as part of the national campaign program during the holy month of Ramadan. Its aim is to protect consumer rights, bolster consumer trust in the markets, enhance the competitiveness of domestic products, and ensure that there are no non-compliant pre-packaged products in the markets that fail to meet mandatory requirements.
The campaign encompassed all regions of the Emirate, including the cities of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra, verifying a total of 1,976 items, which represented 313 distinct products.
H.E. Khalaf Khalifa Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of Market & Consumer Services at the ADQCC, stated: "The council's strategy focuses on enhancing collaboration with various entities to establish a unified cooperation framework with partners, which facilitates the implementation of the highest standards of quality and conformity across its operations.
"The implemented campaign, aligned with the country's precautionary measures, aims to emphasize the significance of paying attention to the weights and quantities in packaged products and ensuring the credibility of Ramadan offers. This includes verifying real increases in volumes, percentage increases in weights, checking product integrity, and confirming actual quantities in pre-packaged packages," he added.
Since 2013, the council has been exercising legal Metrological control over pre-packaged products in factories and at commercial agents for imported brands and packaged product’s displayed at commercial outlets based on the council's Establishment Law and the authorization agreement to carry out Metrological verification of legal measuring instruments and pre-packaged products, in accordance with the mandatory requirements, legislation and the UAE technical regulation for product quantity control, in order to ensure the conformity of the validity of the data mentioned on the information card related to the nominal quantity and units of measurement advertised on the product, in addition to the validity of the quantity of the product in pre-packaged products, which include solid containers, liquid containers, solid containers with liquid medium (net weight), containers whose quantities are measured by the correct number, and control over the containers whose quantity is measured by length and area.
ADQCC is the leading national entity in providing metrological verification services, adhering to the best international technical and professional practices. This is achieved through the selection of highly qualified Emirati personnel to conduct inspection and verification tasks in the field, utilizing the Central Laboratory of the ADQCC and the latest equipment.
It is noteworthy that the ADQCC's verification of legal measuring instruments includes checking high and low precision scales, oil meters, meters used in the sale of fabrics, tire pressure gauges, and medical devices subject to metrological control. This verification is conducted through inspection campaigns and compliance is ensured by applying legal measurement units stipulated by the national system of measurement in commercial transactions.
