ABU DHABI, September 22, 2021: The Central Testing Laboratory of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC) said it is important to develop programmes that ensure and enhance the quality and safety of livestock feed to international standards and in line with the local market’s demand for healthy feeds.

The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority has been working on a herbal feed support program and distribution of specific types of subsidized feeds to livestock breeders  on a monthly basis in Abu Dhabi as part of these programmes, QCC said, adding that these feeds mix Jet and Rhodes grass with other feeds. Under an annual supply contract, these feeds are also supplied by Abu Dhabi-based companies to 16 livestock feed hubs across many countries including the US, Spain, Italy, Sudan, Egypt, South Africa and Argentina.
The Central Testing Laboratory works with the authority by collaborating in testing the feeds to ensure its quality and safety, said Eng. Abdullah Hassan Al-Maaini, Executive Director of the laboratory. The laboratory also recently expanded the scope of its testing services to detect pesticide residues. The Central Testing Laboratory is also the first laboratory in the country to offer a large and comprehensive scope for testing pesticide residues, he said.
Eng. Al-Maaini said the laboratory’s services have made significant impact on preserving livestock by ensuring the quality and sustainability of animal feed as well as food safety. This in turn has also enhanced biosecurity guaranteeing   animal health and upgrading animal production. The laboratory provides these services using best-in-class technologies and the latest equipment, he said.
The animal feed examinations are carried out in food laboratories while the main Central Testing Laboratory conducts chemical and microbiological tests to ensure food safety and quality. The laboratory also has a first-of-its-kind capability to detect ergot toxins using advanced technologies, Eng. Al-Maaini said, adding that it is a milestone achievement.
Farm owners can avail the laboratory’s services to check their products by directly approaching the provision centers at the Central Testing Laboratory after applying through a quality system.
The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority’s Department of Animal Production collects grass fodders at its three distribution centers in Abu Dhabi, and after ensuring conformity to quality and contractual requirements, samples are sent to the QCC laboratories to verify the safety of the feed, said His Excellency Rashid bin Rasas Al Mansouri, Executive Director of the livestock sector at the authority.
His Excellency said that based on the laboratory inputs, the authority takes decisions to either reject or accept the animal feeds before distributing it onward to end users.
QCC’s Central Testing Laboratory provides a variety of safety and quality testing services to different verticals in Abu Dhabi, including food products, water and beverages, cosmetics in addition to environmental checks. The laboratory also   serves its partners from the industrial sector for scientific research services, consultations, specialized training services, and the issuance of conformity certificates.
