Abu Dhabi, August 19, 2024: The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC) held the meeting of the Abu Dhabi Standard Technical Committee for the second quarter of 2024, chaired by H.E. Brigadier Jassim Al Harmoudi, First Vice Chairman of the Committee. The committee includes 37 members representing 25 government entities.
The meeting discussed the Guidance Manual for the Evaluation of Pedestrian, Bicycle, and Micro-Mobility Paths, which is regarded as one of the key technical documents within the Abu Dhabi Service Infrastructure Guides (ISGL).
The guide was prepared at the request of the Integrated Transport Centre of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, in cooperation with Abu Dhabi City Municipality, Al Ain City Municipality, Abu Dhabi Police, United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), Aldar Properties, and specialized consulting companies.
The guide aims to ensure that all road and area plans being developed in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi consider the mobility, comfort, and safety needs of pedestrians, cyclists, and micro-mobility users. Its goal is to provide a safe environment that encourages cycling and sustainable mobility, enhances the physical and psychological health of individuals, and reduces road traffic congestion.
This step aligns with Abu Dhabi's efforts to provide a safe and sustainable environment for mobility. The new guideline includes a set of technical prerequisites and qualifications required for working in the field of assessing pedestrian, bicycle, and micro-mobility infrastructure in road projects and the development of residential and commercial areas. It covers various stages of assessment throughout the project's progress.
H.E. Brigadier Jassim Al Harmoudi, First Vice Chairman of the Committee, said: "The outputs of the Standard Technical Committee’s work reflect the Council’s efforts to achieve its vision of upgrading the quality infrastructure and helping the Emirate of Abu Dhabi excel globally.”
"The Council works in cooperation with government and private sector partners to develop technical and professional standards across various sectors and strives to ensure quality and conformity in all activities and industries," he added.
“Encouraging the use of micro-mobility by providing a safe and comfortable environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and users of these modes of transport will contribute to enhancing individuals' physical and psychological health and reducing traffic congestion on the roads," Brigadier Jassim affirmed.
For his part, Engineer Abdulrahman Al Shizawi, Acting Executive Director of Planning and Strategic Affairs at Abu Dhabi Mobility, said: "The adoption of this guideline is part of our continuous efforts to develop mobility infrastructure in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in line with the vision of our wise leadership to enhance the sector's sustainability and achieve sustainable development goals. It also reflects our commitment to providing a safe and attractive environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and micro-mobility users."
"We have worked closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the guidelines incorporate global best practices and the latest standards in sustainable transportation infrastructure and safe transportation system implementation,” Engineer Shizawi explained.
“We are confident that implementing these standards will enhance the attractiveness and safety of the road network in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi,” he added.
